biography

1956年アメリカ・ロサンゼルス生まれ、現在ドイツ・ケルンとドュッセルドルフを拠点に活動。現代の写真界の構造を通じて、メディアイメージとその政治的意味を探求している。制作時には精緻なコンセプトを組み立て、作家の指示のもと他のカメラマンに写真を撮影させるという映画監督のような手法で作品を発表している。写真と映像の歴史に深い関心を持ち、後期資本主義社会を支えるマーケティングやメディアイメージについてや、それらが支配する社会構造を的確に批評する簡潔な作品群を生み出している。現在は、ボイスやリヒターやポルケらを育てたドイツ最古の美術学校の一つであるデュッセルドルフ芸術アカデミーで写真科の教授を務める。2014年から2015年にかけて大規模な回顧展が開催され、シカゴ美術館、ニューヨーク近代美術館、ホワイトチャペルギャラリーを巡回した。
